Grade 2 Assembly Songs to Practice

Hi Everyone,

Now that we are done our Willy Wonka performance, it is time to practice for our Grade 2 Assembly, which is on Monday May 2!  Our assembly is based on the character trait of Fairness.  Please practice these songs with your child as our assembly is coming up very quickly!

April 18 - 22

Hi Everyone,

Wow, what a great turn out to our Willy Wonka concert!  We loved seeing everyone there and the kids did absolutely AMAZING!  They worked hard learning their songs!  Here are a few other things we did this week:

Reading - We had time for some silent reading practice this week.

Writing - We continued talking about how to start our story with a great beginning.  Next week, we will move onto the main event of the story.

Math - We learned a fun new math game using cards.  It is called Take 4 and add.  Ask your child to teach it to you!

Science - We explored more about liquids.  We also looked at what sorts of materials would be good to use to make an umbrella.  We know the most important thing about an umbrella is for it to be waterproof.

April 4 - 8

Hi Everyone!

Here is what we did this week:

Reading - We practiced our spelling words  using bubble letters and playing a game called secret square.  We read out loud during reading groups and answered questions about stories that we read.

Writing - We practiced how to create great beginnings to our stories.  We know there are different ways to begin a story to grab the readers attention.  We also know that a beginning introduces the characters and the setting of the story.

Math - We continued practicing our double digit addition and subtraction skills.  We also worked on our single digit addition and subtraction mental math.  We measured and we also did some calendar word problems.

Science - We did an experiment on how to change steam (water vapour) back into a liquid.  We also predicted which container of water would have the most water left by the end of next week.  One container has a lid on and the other has no lid.

Social Studies - We researched some questions about Calgary.  We looked at when Calgary became a city, why is it called Calgary, and more!

March 28 - April 1

Hi Everyone,

Here is what we worked on this week:

Reading - We continued to work on Reading comprehension and understanding the stories that we read.

Writing - We worked on Climbing stories.  We specifically looked at different ways to begin our stories.  These are the 3 great beginnings we have practiced so far:

1. Amazing Action

2. Catchy Question

3. Sound Effect

Math - We continued to measure the length of objects using non-standard measurement.  We then started to compare the mass of different objects.

Science - We did a few experiments to learn more about water and compared it to other liquids.  Ask me what surface tension and viscosity mean.

Social Studies - We talked about what we already know about Calgary:  

- it is in the prairie region

- it has many buildings including: schools, restaurants, stores, hotels

- we have all different types of weather

- the mountains are close

- we have lakes, rivers, wetlands, creeks, ponds

- Calgary Flames

March 14 - 18

We made it to SPRING BREAK :-)

We had a fun and busy week at school this week.  Here is what we worked on:

Reading - We continued practicing reading out loud with a nice and loud voice and to stop at periods.  We practiced our spelling words, making sentences, and making words in reading groups.

Writing - We started learning about the elements of a climbing story.  We listened to 2 climbing stories in class and discussed their beginning, middle, and end.  They each had 2 attempts to solve the problem and then the actual solution.

Math - We continued practicing double digit addition and subtraction.  We also worked on measuring things in our classroom using non-standard measuring tools such as our pencils, erasers, and tens blocks.

Science - We continued talking about the importance of clean water.  We talked about how we can do our part to help keep Earth's water clean.

Social Studies - We will look more at our community of Calgary after Spring Break.
