Hi Everyone,

Here is what we worked on this week:

Reading - We continued to practice reading out loud:

- with a loud and clear voice

- using expression

- stopping at periods and paying attention to punctuation

Writing - We wrote a climbing story about a character with a kite.  The story had all of the parts of a climbing story:

1. Great Beginning (included 5 facts about the character and 5 facts about the setting)

2. Main Event - introduces the problem

3. Solution #1 - that does not work

4. Solution #2 - that does not work

5. Solution #3 - that works

6. Extended Ending - ends with a feeling, memory, decision, or a wish

Math - We worked on addition, subtraction, 3D shapes, graphing, and word problems

Science - We learned a lot about Buoyancy and Boats in our in-school field trip from Teachers Pet.

- Sinking and Floating Objects

- Different types of boats

- Keels

- and more!

Social Studies - We learned more about the Blackfoot First Nations culture and people.

Have a great weekend!

May 16 - 20

Here are a few things we did this week:

Reading - We talked about reading out loud with expression.  We talked about how the end punctuation of a sentence dictates how you read it and using expression helps the listener understand what is going on in the story.

Writing - We continued working on our climbing story.  We used a picture of a squirrel jumping out of a tree as a starting point.  We have written together and on our own:
1. a great beginning
2. main event/ introduction to the problem
3. Attempt #1 to solve the problem which does not work
4. Attempt #2 to solve the problem which does not work
5. Attempt #3 which solves the problem.
6. Extended ending - using a feeling, wish, decision, or memory

Math - We have continued to practice our addition and subtraction mental math and double digit skills.  We talked about how many edges, vertices, and faces these 3D objects have - sphere, cube, pyramid, cone, and cylinder.

Science - We did a few buoyancy and boats experiments which were:
1. Does it sink or float?
2. Can a floating object sink?
3. Can a sinking object float?

Social Studies - We looked further into Calgary and its natural resources, goods, and services.  We also looked into the Blackfoot culture and learned about their language, traditional food, clothing and art.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

May 9 - 13

Hi Everyone,

Here is what we did this week:

Reading - We have worked on answering questions and making predictions about stories read in class.  We continue to practice reading out loud in a group.

Writing - We are continuing to work on our climbing stories.  We have reviewed great beginnings, how to introduce the main event/problem with details and our 5 senses, and are now planning the rest of our story with 2 solutions that do not work, and then a solution that works.

Math - We have done some measurement activities and practiced our double digit subtraction with borrowing.  We have also worked on our mental math skills.  We were able to teach our Kindergarten buddies two games to play with our power of ten cards.

Science - We have started our last science unit this year.  It is on Buoyancy and Boats.  We tested different objects to see if they would sink or float.  We talked about buoyancy, submerged and partially submerged.

Social Studies - We are in the middle of our research on one topic pertaining to Calgary or the Blackfoot culture.  We are creating a poster to put up in our classroom showing our learning.

Have a great weekend!

May 2 - 6

Hi Everyone,

The Grade 2's did an amazing job on their assembly!  If you get a chance, you should watch it on the link emailed to you.

Here is what we did this week:

Reading - We continued to work on comprehension and understanding what we are reading.

Writing - We are practicing writing the main event to our story.  This will include many details and most likely introduce the problem.

Math - We practiced our addition and subtraction skills.  We also talked about 3D shapes some more.

Science - We finished our exploring liquids unit and are now going to be learning about Boats and Buoyancy.

Social Studies - We did some research on Calgary.  Ask your child what question they are researching.

Have a great weekend and HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all of the Mom's out there :-)

April 25 - 29

Hi Everyone,
Here is what we did this week:

Writing - We practiced writing the main event/ problem in a story that we had wrote a great beginning to.

Math - We did some more measuring and 3-D object reviews.  We also practiced our addition and subtraction skills.

Science - We talked more about the water cycle - precipitation, collection, evaporation, and condensation.

Social Studies - We practiced being classroom citizens while working on our assembly that will be on Monday May 2!  We are excited for it!

Have a great weekend!
